The Dalai Lama Tibet's political and spiritual leader, fled to India in 1959. He now lives among over 100,000 other Tibetan refugees and their government in exile.
Destruction All but 12 of more than 6,000 monasteries were destroyed. Many of them were used as target practice by Chinese artillery. China has attempted to wipe out Tibet's rich heritage.
